Hi from a new member.

My partner has had a clay shooting lesson and caught the bug!

Could anyone recommend a shooting school in the Oldham/Rochdale/
Glossop/Huddersfield area where good tuition and practice are
available.

The aim is to eventually become proficient enough to shoot game.

If anyone can help with recommendations or any other advice I would be
grateful.

Just go and shoot game as soon as you are 'safe'. Clays decelerate while
game accelerates so as soon as you get bum-belly-beak-bang right it's
best not to get too fixed on clays IMO, YMMV.

Sorry, bad form to follow-up on my own post, I know, but I should have
said that NOW is the best time to get out into the field in the beating
line. Find a shoot that operates on a day you can get to regularly and
offer to beat - they're usually short. Beat regularly form now till the
end of the season (end of January) and you will almost certainly be
offered one or more days free shooting on the 'beaters days' BUT you
will be expected to be able to handle a gun (borrow one if needs be)
safely. No-one will mind too much if you miss the birds (they'll just
take the piss) but they WILL mind if you shoot a beater!

Thanks everyone for your help. We will definitely try the Holmfirth
school, that sounds great. Beating sounds like a good idea as well to
get some experience.

On the other hand knowing vaguely what you are doing might result in
fewer wounded birds wandering off to die slowly in a bush somewhere.

:-)

I thought that's what I said, or rather meant, about being 'safe' -
knowing vaguely what you're doing. Anyway, that's what dogs and
pickers-up are for!

If your idea of a good day's shooting is to wound lots of stuff and
having dogs/people wandering around finishing it off, then I think we
will disagree about a lot of things.

Like the original poster, I shot a year of clays before I felt qualified
to shoot live game/vermin. I guess it depends on your view of respecting
your quarry and other "quaint" traditions...

If you agree with me, indeed if you had previously agreed with me, then I
apologise :)

Try Brian and John hinchcliffe at Holmfirth shooting school, John is
an international skeet shooter.
The ground is opposite the Ford Inn on the Isle of Skye Rd from
Greenfield to Holmfirth, they shoot every Sun and Wed afternoon,
or any day for a booked lesson.

There are two grounds that spring to mind in Glossop The Grouse
http://www.thegrouseshootingground.co.uk/tuition.html
and Little Mill at Rowarth
http://www.thelittlemill.co.uk/home.htm
I cut my teeth at these (very) many years ago though by far the best way to
ease into to shooting is with a group of friends most clay shooters are
evangelists of a sort and the cameraderie of a happy group (not to mention
the sledgeing/barracking ) makes the day.
