The Leics. and Rutland Olympic Skeet champs are being held this weekend,
I'm getting an urge to enter, though I've never shot a round of OSK
before.
I do reasonably ok in ESK, hitting 20-24 usually, is OSK much harder,
and is it worth turning up to have a go?

You know the rules ? Give it a go !

It is a bit 'quicker' though.. so as you have not done it before
prepare for lower scores..

Certainly worth a try. Try to learn the rules before you start, but my
one attempt at it was a great laugh and I keep meaning to try again.

And who knows, maybe 2012 beckons you....

Well, I turned up and entered, and asked the rules 2 minutes before the
first shot, and because I'd never done it before, I thought I'll go 3rd
or 4th in the squad. I went first. I then hit a few, well, a few more
hits than misses. Just. 27/50.
Doing it for the first time is not an excuse, another chap on the squad
(Paul Applebee) hadnt done it before either, and also denied knowledge
of ESK, yet he then took the lead with 41/50, and was top when I left.He
even hit 3/4 on stand 8, which all others seemed to be having problems
with.

Somehow, I got the impression that 2024 may be about right, so long as I
practice every day until then!
With such a short time to hit the clays on Stand 8, I think a small bore
gun may be better for this than a 12b.I used to have a lightweight 27"
20b - I reckon that would have been ideal, the .410 I have now may be
too lightweight.

And going off the subject - barrel fouling on small bores. After using my
.410 with loads of cartridges, and asking others their views, I think
the cause of the fouling is plastic wads. The barrels get very hot - I
did a 50 shot skeet last week, and even the foreend wood was getting
hot, this is promoting the sticking of plastic in the barrel, causing
the heavy, really bad barrel fouling myself and others have encountered.
I tried a new (to me) cartridge, Eley Long range 410, no.7 with fibre
wad, and it was a revelation - no barrel fouling at all, though there
was a lot of smoke/soot/powder, but easily cleaned with the brass brush.
I've put an order in for these now, and will be sticking with fibre.

Alan.
In our 28bores we now only use fibre wad for precisely this reason.
